As a part of rehabilitation and empowerment of the visually impaired, we need to see more low vision centers setup across India.
Over the past 6 months, my team has been visiting numerous Optometrist and Opthalmologists and one of the things that has become evident, is that very few of them are working with assistive technology or recommending the use of low vision aids that can benefit the people.
There are very few low vision centers like L V Prasad Eye Hospital that are equiped with the different low vision aids available. I am going to highlight a few products that can change the lives of people with low vision.
Power TV Glasses – Lightweight, adjustable Optelec Power TV Glasses provide 2.1X magnification for distance viewing. These comfortable glasses are perfect for watching television, movies, sporting events or other outdoor activities. Using a binocular telescope system, the Optelec Power TV glasses help to maximize the size of the television screen and other objects.- Handheld Magnifier – Compact mini -
A small size magnifier, that can help you to read read from medicine dosage labels, restaurant menus and bus timetables. Simply position the Compact mini over reading material and objects and view an enlarged, high contrast image on the 3.5-inch full colour screen. Adjustment of the magnification up to 11 times is at the press of a button, with the facility to change the appearance of text colors using the range of high-contrast viewing options.
Desktop Magnifier – ClearView+ 17″ – A great magnifier to read books, newspapers, magazines. It is amazing that a lot of elderly people who want to continue to read are opting for the ClearView +. The ClearView+ by Optelec is available in 17, 18, 19 and 22 inches.
This is only a start you can see many more products that cater to the needs of the low vision or visually impaired in our products section as well as see some videos on our slideshare.
